How “Fat Dad Fit Dad” Got Started

My name is Jim Johnson. I am my daughter’s Science Fair project.

I am 53 and I need help. I’m over weight and if I don’t make some changes, my life won’t end well. Hannah, my 3rd grade daughter, is going to “save my life” in this project. She is going to learn the effects of diet and different types and intensity of exercise on my life – weight loss, waist line, and blood pressure.

Over the course of the next several weeks, I will be following her plans and we’ll see what happens. I’ll be updating my progress on this site as well as my thoughts, feelings, and insight as we go along. I’ve asked Hannah to periodically blog here, too.

Hannah will be consulting with local nutrition and exercise experts. She will be researching what foods I should be eating and which ones I should be avoiding. She will be learning about what exercises are best for weight loss and my heart. She will be using My Fitness Pal app and the blood pressure app that I’ve been using for a couple of years. She will be logging a ton of data and then analyzing it. The Haverhill Elementary Science Fair is on February 27, 2013.

We’ll include photos and videos when we can. If I find some good recipes, I’ll share them. If a particular exercise works well for me, you’ll know that, too.

We begin on Monday, December 3, 2012. Yes, we’re going to start this before the Christmas holiday eating season. Read along. Post comments. Share recipes. Share ideas. I would appreciate your encouragement.

Hannah is excited for this to start.

Let’s get this Fat Dad to turn into a Fit Dad. I’m up for it!

(Yes, I drive a Honda FIT. This was my destiny!)

  1. What dads will do for science…this is great. You can’t beat this as a motivational tool. A third grader’s science fair project as well as your daughter’s project. I am guessing you both will learn more about life than any planets made out of styrofoam. It is going to be a long project but if you stick with it the benefits are endless

  2. I love both the idea for the science project and the fact that you’ve created a blog about it! Best of luck, Jim!! (from Laurie Nichols)

  3. Hi Jim, Brian is my name from Perth Western Australia. I am not kidding when I write this as I was thinking of starting a blog with the same Title of Fat Dad Fit Dad. I am a 44 year old male who is the proud father a 2 beautiful boys 4 years old and 4 months old.
We have been through a tough 2 years as we lost a little girl when my wife was 22 weeks pregnant 2 years which broke our hearts and the pain is still very real today.
We almost lost Roger at 20 weeks into the pregnancy….

    • Wow! I’m so sorry for that awful pain you’ve been through. My wife and I had been told we would never have children, but God had a different idea. I have a daughter almost 10 and an 7 year old son. We came close to losing our Hannah during pregnancy. But she is strong and smarter than I am!

All the best to you and your family. And to your fitness goals. It can be done! Day at a time, my friend.

  4. as my wife had complications and was on bed rest for 17 weeks. A lot of emotional eating and excercise was a thing of the past up to and after the birth of Roger and I recently had a bout of Pneumonia and diagnosed with Anemia. I was riding my bike to work at the start of the year and the weight was coming off but I have now put back on 15kgs in a short time frame. After everything we have been through we are all getting back on track and like you I need to change my habits and get fit hence thinking of the title. I wish you and your family all the very best on the weight loss journey.
